Concepts from Chaos

Hello again everyone! I've been going through my sketchbooks to see if I have any meager offerings for you and I've found a few.

A sketch of Alencia and Theolyn from a month ago. I've been slowly building their world and I've been looking at ideas for noble formal wear for Alencia's home town of 'Argate.' I'm trying to combine medieval costume with Indian Saris. I think the mixtures of fabrics, in both textures and patterns, will blend nicely with the cuts of the costumes. I'll post more of those as I go. (Pen on sketchbook paper.)

Some character concepts for a character from a comic project I'm working on with my partner in crime, Ryan Moody. (ballpoint and brush pens on sketchbook paper.)

Another concept from my Alencia stories, she tries to exorcise this demon from a family's home but it instead ends up following her around and terrorizing her. His appearance may change by the time he finally ends up in the comic but this is the closest to what's in my head I was able to draw so far. Research for him is fun as it includes watching the Paranormal Activity movies, and episodes of 'Paranormal State.' (Reference used here. Blue pencil and brush pen on sketchbook paper, colored in Photoshop CS5.5)

And here's a large poster I did as a Christmas commission. The client asked for their nephew as a super hero. We brainstormed on concepts and I created the costume for him. The poster is meant to look like the cover of a comic book. The font is "In a Flash" by Walter Velez.

I hope you all had a great holiday, and look forward to the new year! See you in 2012!

News!

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been gone for most of the month. I've been really busy with work and the holidays. It's been a bit rough but I'm glad for the most part it's over. I did get to take my first solo road trip up to Richmond to reconnect with some close friends. It was really great to see them all again.

In Art related news: I'm going to be teaching a comics class with my local adult learning center. All the info is here. I'll be making fliers tomorrow to drop off at my local comic book store this week. I'm pretty excited! I'll be sharing my love of comics, and what I learned about them in school, with others. They are also going to let high school kids ages 16 and up take the class too so hopefully I can inspire some of them to per-sue doing comics. 10th grade was when I first realized this was what I wanted to do; even if no one will pay me, so it'll be pretty rad to see other kids with the same passion and help nurture it.

I'm also gearing up to do some painting soon. My mom passed down all her acrylic paints and supplies to me so now I have a lot more to work with. I'm working on a little personal water color painting but I find myself in the state of 'I really want to work on something but I want to skip the layout work and just jump into it!' which never works out, so I've had to slow myself down. I've also been getting back into some jewelry/accessory making and just bought some supplies from JoAnn's fabrics today. Yay for sales! I'll be posting anything I come up with if its' nice enough. I haven't gotten a lot of overall comics or work done. I've been stretching myself out so much I'm feeling a bit flustered. But my time should be opening up soon so I'll have time to get grinding on some art works! I'll also be working on my Etsy store, so I'll post that here and around when it's finally running. I'm hoping to be selling comics, artwork, and hand made accessories.

Well I'm off to work for now. I'll be posting more work here soon. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday!

Megalocks

A warm up brush pen drawing from this morning. A friend of mine posted this video on FB today and I was instantly inspired to draw the lead singer of Megadeth, Dave Mustaine, and his amazing hair.

After I eventually finish my Blind Guardian tribute illustration I will have to do a Megadeth one. I first listened to them in high school after borrowing a copy of ‘Youthanasia’ from the base library and falling instantly for it. I’ve been collecting as many albums of theirs as I can since.

I Comic, Therefore I Am.

Hello all!

In the busy hustle and bustle of the holiday season I have finally put together my illustrated guide to my comic work process. I origianly meant this to be a comic but I had so much to say that I figured an illustrated guide would be more appropriate. But it's done and ready for your enjoyment. This is not meant to be a 'how to' guide, this merely shows what I do and why. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Dungeons and Dragons

Hello all! The holiday season is heating up and so have my hours at work. I've been busy busy but managed to get a few sketches out while watching some of the old Dungeons & Dragons tv series with Ryan. Here's some sketches I did of the kids. I'd like to get a few more done of the cast and the lead villain Venger but we'll see how that goes :P It was nice to sketch a little bit of fan art since I rarely do it. Here’s my take on Presto, the Magician (the only kid without a real name), Sheila, the Thief, Eric, the Cavalier, and Diana, the Acrobat.
I bought the DVD set a few years ago on a whim, but I’m glad I did. It’s different from the actual game despite Gary Gygax being I believe a producer for it, but its still a fun and interesting fantasy series. And I don’t care what anyone says, Venger is a badass villain. He may seem hokey at first but especially when the kids have to work with him he seems all the more formidable and frighting. And Eric the ‘Caviler’ is a hilarious jerk.

Guns and Cars

Hey Everyone! I've been super busy with work lately so art has been slower as of late. I still have multiple projects going on including lettering my Alencia comic and brainstorming ideas for the next ones. I'm also hoping to do some painting soon. It's been a while since I've done any watercolor painting. In the meantime here are some sketches I did earlier this month at a Gun Club flea market/Family event. People were selling guns and war memorabilia of every kind, and there were even some civil war reenactors. One of which was nice enough to pose for me while he and another gentleman shared stories and history lessons about the war. It was pretty interesting.

I was concentrating so hard on drawing his hands that they came out far too big :P Still a fun exercise.

Bonus: Some observation sketches of cars in a parking lot. I was at the car repair place waiting for my dad to pick me up. Some crickets were fighting near by, resulting in one ripping the others' leg off. I was going to draw them but the looser of the battle hid under my shoe (and no I did not step on him). Needless to say, I need to practice drawing cars more.

Also, I'm working on opening an Etsy store! I'll be selling comics and artwork from it. And maybe some crafts later. I still need to take some product photos and spruce it up. As soon as it's done I'll be sure to post links everywhere! :)

Seven Thousand and Counting!

Hi everyone! I just noticed last night that the blog count has his over 7,000 views! So to celebrate I drew up a little sketch.

Mechanical pencil on card stock, textures by Hibbary.

I wish I could have done something fancier but I'm really busy with car and job stuff so I'm not gonna have time. (I might revisit it again to make it look more like what was in my head, colored and all.) I am going to cram as much art into my spare time as I can, so don't worry about this blog becoming desolate. Me not drawing is equated to me not breathing ;P

I'd also just to thank everyone who visits my blog (and facebook, and tumblr) and thank you for all the support. I really appreciate it! Coming up I've also got some sketches to post from a gun show/flea market I was helping my dad at last week. There was even a historical reenactor who posed for me so I could draw him! It was very nice of him. So that'll be coming soon. Stay tuned!

Alencia: A Noble Deed Preview

Hello all! I'm nearing completion of my current Alenica solo story and I'm very excited. Alencia is a character who has been with me a long time and has grown into one of my favorite and most developed characters (in case you didn't realize by how much I draw her). My plan for her is to make episodic stories for her, with an over arching story arch. I've been doing lots of writing and planning and I'm on my way. The first story is nearing completion so I thought I'd share with you a preview of some of the pages so far, sans text.

Down the road I'd also like to formally introduce you to Alencia and show you my method and process in drawing comics, both in their own posts. I'm also thinking about releasing each 'episode' as a PDF file for a few dollars. Then when I get more stories done I can release a full book. I enjoy reading web comics but there is something so satisfying about holding a book in my hands and reading it. I also have grown a distaste for online e-readers for comics. I've been reading Dark Horse's 'The Thing' comic online and the e-reader for it drives me crazy. The panels don't always fit the screen size and it stretches some panels to pixilate them and I just really don't like it. If they release a trade for it I will buy it in a heartbeat. The Thing + Vikings = A-OK in my book.

Well enjoy the pages and let me know what you think! I'll get back to you on the PDF files once I figure out a good way to sell them. Maybe an Etsy page? We'll see.

Everyday I'm Hustlin...

Just a quick update- I've added more projects to my portfolio site, and fixed the buttons so they are smaller and look nicer. I think it's a bit easier to navigate now. I'm also working on finishing up the current Alencia story and adding grey tones to it. Then when that is done I'll be adding text and doing a cover image. I'm also hoping to do more concept work for some other comics I want to draw soon, including some collaborations. My good friend El Goro is putting together a script for his own Alencia story that I'll be drawing. I am so excited, you have no ideaaaa!

Central Park Romance

Here are some pictures from a recent commission I did for a client of her and her boyfriend. They are based on actual photographs of the couple.

Each image is 4 x 6 inches and was inked on 400 series Bristol board with Non-Photo Blue Pencil and Pentel pocket brush pen. Colored in Photoshop CS5. The client is going to give these to her boyfriend for their anniversary. I hope he likes them!

Battle Cry

Here's a cool down sketch I did tonight while watching "The Sacred Blacksmith" anime. The theme song got me pumped up to draw this. However the anime itself is bothering me a little. The fact this female knight needs to be constantly saved by the male lead character and that ,while she is determined to be successful, she simply cannot hold her own in battle. Also at first she wants to be a great knight so she can protect people of the city, but then her motivations turns to showing this guy that she can fight (which she clearly can't). I find the 'I'm doing it for an obvious forced love interest' plot to be boring and adds nothing to the characters. I also find no amusement in the fixation the show has on her breasts : /

But ranting aside! Here are my girls, who are perfectly capable of holding their own in battle. I Decided to slap a color down and do some lighting. No references were used for the poses or the lighting but that's why it's a wind down sketch. Done with Non-photo Blue pencil and Pocket Pentel Brush Pen on Bristol vellum.

Great news! My portfolio site is up and running! It'll be updated as I progress on projects and new ones will be added along the way. Check it out~ Now to watch some 'Tiger & Bunny.'

Behance

Hey guys! Quick update before I get back to work, I have a Behance profile now! Check it out! http://www.behance.net/FranRowan This is also cool because I can easily show off projects, like Kale on it. I have a few preview pages up so take a gander~ If you're on Behance yourself, let me know! I still plan to post some consecutive preview pages here, I've just been a bit busy. See you later with some more artwork!

Kicking Back

Hello all! I bring you a sketch of Kale before I head of for bed~

I felt like I hadn't drawn her in a long time, but I forgot about the cafe drawing :P Hopefully I can color that some time. I do however have some art/design employment opportunities coming my way so that will eat up some of my time. However developing the comics will continue. I just get to do something other than sell glasses for a bit. I'm looking forward to it. Wish me luck!

Piggy Back Ride

Playful warm-up drawing of Theolyn giving Alencia a piggy back ride. Her foot was sprained and is wrapped up while it heals for a few hours (the healing process accelerated by a spell).

Done with non-photo blue pencil and brush pen.

Cafe' Chit-Chat

Alencia and Kale hanging out at a little Cafe’ in Stonebridge. Alencia insisted they have the afternoon tea sampler.

I wanted to show their different mannerisms, draw some everyday armor/new clothes for Kale, and have a cafe setting (I saw Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations first episode about Paris last night. I want to visit there very badly).

As for the city of Stonebridge it’s a cross between Venice and Paris. It was once two towns that decided to join together into one city. They did so by building a stone bridge between the two towns. The bridge is very large and is a symbolic landmark (based on the Rialto bridge in Venice). There are lots of smaller bridges that join areas of the city together, this is just the most famous one. I’ll be doing some concept art for it soon.

WIP sketch. To be colored eventually.

Alencia Preview/Let's Talk about Kale

Here's a little preview from the 17 page Alencia comic I'm working on. After I finish this baby up its' back to work on continuing Kale's story. (I've been feeling really conflicted about it lately but I'll explain a bit more later.) Here's a panel from page 11.

Here's Alencia casting a spell on her sword while fighting the evil undead.
Very fun to draw. Done with non-photo blue pencil and a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen.

The reason I've been feeling conflicted about Kale's story is mainly because of the circumstances surrounding me doing it. When I originally sat down to do her story I gave myself less than a year to do it and publish it in time for a convention. I originally wanted it to be a stand alone book, a self contained story. It ended up being cut up and will be maybe three issues, possibly more, by now. This was also my first time doing a self published book (aside from a mini comic done for my 'Intro. to Sequential' final project a few years prior).

I'm glad I did the first issue of Kale, and I'm really proud of the work I did, but now the art is almost two years old, and my mistakes are becoming even more glaringly obvious to me, to the point where I'm becoming more and more embarrassed about it. If you compare the comic pages to the panel I posted above the improvement is obvious. But I'm glad I did it. I learned SO MUCH from actually getting off of my ass and self publishing the first issue. I wouldn't have gotten that knowledge and experience in a classroom alone.

I'm just faced with some possible choices right now for Kale issue #2. I want to finish the story, its' just the start of it is very rough. It needs polishing but if I restart it then I feel I'd be letting down those people who bought the first issue, and myself. I don't want to get stuck in the endless trap of redoing pages to the point that I don't get to move forward with other projects or finish this one. It's a commitment and I want to see it through to the end.

I've also considered completely dropping it in favor of doing other projects but again, I feel I'd be letting myself and others down, and I can't have that. I want to be a woman of my convictions and finish what I start.

So after I finish this 17 page intro story of Alencia, I'm going back to thumb-nailing and planning out the next issue of Kale. I've also been universe building and have been doing LOTS of writing. This next issue of Kale: Lost & Found is going to blow the first issue out of the water in terms of quality and art direction. To the point where I might offer the first issue with the second as a bonus :P And/or offer a discount on the second issue to those who bought the first one; which I still have a stack of books for.

Either way, this story will be told, and I will make it better with every brush and pen stroke. You have my word.

Coming soon!- 10 page preview of Kale: Lost & Found issue #1, for those who need proof it exists! It may also come with commentary :P Haven't decided if I should further embarrass myself yet... I'm also going to post little insights into the world of Kale and Alencia while I build their universe, so look out for those!

If you read my wall of text, thank you. I'll have more art up soon, and I'll try not to make these text heavy posts a habit :P
Thanks for sticking with me!

Guardians of Metal

Working on a new digital piece, wanted to start it before I completely forgot the idea. A new metal themed tribute piece to my favorite band 'Blind Guardian.' I decided to try another Metal tribute after I had so much fun doing the Dio Tribute, and thought why not do one for my favoritest band ever? I'll talk more about the overall idea and themes used once I finish it.

Soon I'll have some commissions and comic pages coming up, so stay tuned!

Universe Building Ahoy

Hello everyone!
I've been pretty busy lately. I started a new job and have been working on comics. Also learned to drive and got my driver's license :D

I'm gearing up for a collaboration in the future involving Alencia so I'm putting together an information packet about her universe and it's rules. One part of it was a height chart comparing Alencia and Theolyn. I put some flat colors on it and illustrated their weapons that they carry on them (not including Alencia's cooking knives).

Well I've got more work to do! More to come!

Grey Snow

I just posted some old digital comic pages over at my art tumblr so I thought I'd share them here too:

These are pages of a comic I started working on last year; the first page is still in the rough stage and is incomplete. They are based on an introduction for a character that my good friend Ian Davison (El Goro of the podcast ‘Talk Without Rhythm’) wrote for a story idea we were working on together. I’m still hoping to see this project out the end, even if it will most likely take quite a few years to do.

This was my first time working on a comic completely digitally. I learned a lot doing it and I think I will continue to do it this way for this project. I’m hoping to finish the introduction comic for this character, do an introductory comic for another character in the story, then start the whole story from the point that they first meet.

Needless to say this will be on the back burner for a while...

Brown Paper Drawings

I've been drawing in this wonderfully cheap brown paper sketchbook I got from Mainart back in Richmond, and I'm having a lot of fun with it!

My character Alice, a rabbit girl who works at a Maid Cafe. She's part of a story me and Ryan are working on. One of many.

A more somber drawing of my super hero (wannabe) 'Spork Bunny' after what looks like a tiresome battle.

More to come!

Stealthy Alencia

A digital exercise of Alencia. Trying to sketch loose and use flat colors. Done as a break from working on comics.

Art Trades

Tonight I was feeling down so I did some art trades with my very good friends Sier and Reach.

I did a derpy trade with Sier. She gave me the prompt 'Ponies' and I drew her as a My Little Pony at a pony burlesque show (it makes sense because she does Burlesque photography.) And her cutie mark is a sheet of animation paper.

Reach gave me the prompt 'Transhumanism' and this fellow is what I drew. I want to do a poster sized version of this image, but darker and with neon green lighting. I also want to do a short comic about him too :/ I always do this to myself...

We've decided to do these trades on a weekly basis to challenge each other and keep from getting rusty. I'm really excited to see what we come up with in the coming weeks!

Digital Process

Happy 4th of July everyone!
To celebrate I thought I'd share my digital process on my most recent piece, my tribute to Ronnie James Dio.

When I start a digital piece I like to use a pink color (at 50% opacity) to do the under sketch. I'm using CS5.5 and they have a brush option where the brush has a feathered end. I like using this one because it mimics using a brush and I prefer the quality of lines I can create with it.

Next I use a solid black to draw out my line art on another layer.

For this one I figured out the colors as I went but usually I prefer to have at least values and an idea of colors figured out ahead of time. It really does save on headaches. I do the colors on various other layers underneath the line art.

I color the foreground and then do the back ground last.

When I'm done I save a Photoshop file with all the layers, then I smush it together (flatten) and save it as a Tiff, then make smaller jpeg versions with watermarks for putting online. I like to save larger files of everything in case I want to print it or use it for something else later. I learned the hard way not to flatten your only file of a image in case you need to edit them later :/

Well, that's how I work digitally. I hope you all have a great 4th of July! Stay safe and have fun!

Dio Dragon

Dio Dragon Tribute by ~Spork-Bunny on deviantART
(x-posted from DA.)

As many of you probably know (at least the Metal heads will) in May 2010 Ronnie James Dio passed away. My good friend El Goro mentioned his passing on his podcast and said that the only way he can come to terms with his death is to imagine him riding on the back of a dragon on his way to heaven. As soon as he mentioned this I jotted down some thumbnails to turn this into a tribute illustration. A year later I'm going through my sketchbooks and I find the thumbnails. So I sat down all day and worked on it. (While listening to 'The Best of Dio' appropriately enough. Rainbow in the Dark is still one of my favorite songs.)

For the composition I imagined the dragon being long and serpent-like like a Chinese dragon, but a Chinese dragon didn't make sense to me concept-wise. So I decided to design my own dragon for him to ride. He's a guitar playing bat/dragon with lots of arms and horns. I'm quite fond of him now.

I'm very pleased with this. I may tweak it after sitting on it for a while but for now I'm pleased enough to post it. I'm also proud that this is 100% Digital.

Sketchbook Dump

Hey everyone!
I just went through one of my recent sketchbooks and found a whole bunch of things to share.

Sketches of Alencia researching and casting spells.

For this group of sketches I decided to switch the races of the characters. Khalid is now human, Kale, Alencia and Theolyn are tribal cats. I gave Kale spots instead of freckles.

Me and Ryan have been developing a storyline for Spork-Bunny to take part in. It involves her being drafted into a super hero team. The cat guy is an alien that is part of the team. His race is generally really buff and are strong warriors. He's grumpy because he resembles an anime cat boy. SB is assigned to patrol around town with him much to his dissatisfaction.

And doodles of how I've been lately. Waiting to hear back from potential jobs and looking for more to apply for while juggling things that I have to do with things that I want to do. Ah... life!

AMA

Still so busy over here! I'm on the last leg of switching computers, I'm just setting up my files and internet bookmarks now. I'm applying for jobs, progressing in my driving lessons, and getting ready for Anime Mid Atlantic this weekend! I'll be doing my first real cosplay as a human version of Rarity from 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.' I'm really excited for it, its' such an eccentric costume: Purple curly wig, red cat eye glasses, pencil skirt and heels; I feel so cool wearing it :P Well see how it goes over this weekend. I was planning on also cosplaying as Jade Harley from Homestuck but I cannot for the life of me find my wig. So I'll be doing that one another time when I can find my precious wig.

More art to come soon, but probably next week. I have sketches to scan and put together and I plan to make a new header for this blog too. It's looking a bit bare for my tastes...

Also I'll be posting a new sales post when I get back next week. I've got some lovely gothic clothing to sell including a lovely long jacket and some bodices.

Chillin with Ramla

I finally had some time to draw myself a little something during my weekly online RP session with my friends. I've got Ramla and her companion the messenger Memphis. I used references for her clothes and for Memphis which resulted in me liking this a whole lot more. However her left foot looks broken now. I originally wanted her to be balancing on her heels and then I couldn't make up my mind and just concentrated on the boots being accurate. I'll try to fix it digitally later. I also gave her pigtails for fun.

A Message From Your Fran

Hello everyone!

I've graduated college, moved, am job searching, re-learning how to drive, and sorting out all of my belongings. I'll be donating a lot of stuff but I'm selling a few things online. So far I have a bunch of manga for sale over here I'll be doing a second sales post once I gather some more things together.

I'm also setting up a little office space, it's turning out quite nice so far. My scanner is set up so I'll be scanning sketches and things soon. I've also been doing some writing but mostly I've been busy getting things organized.

I'll be back with more work soon. I've got some portfolio pieces I want to do/redo.
See you soon!

Alencia had a bit too much wine and fell asleep.
A wind down sketch. The anatomy is all over the place. But I really love how Theolyn's face came out.

Character Sheet'n

I finally got around to doing a simple character sheet for my characters Alencia and Theolyn. I'm especially proud of how Theolyn looks. I used multiple references to get him to look right and figure out his build and pose.

Alencia and Theolyn by ~Spork-Bunny on deviantART

I've also been working on writing and figuring out Alencia's stories so I can start her comics up. I'm enjoying sitting down and writing again, I've almost forgotten how much I enjoy it. I'll do inked/colored ones later for the comic.

Stairs of Healing

So I graduated today (yesterday now). I'm officially a college graduate. I pick up my diploma tomorrow (during a one hour window when the entire art school will be picking theirs up. I really hope they are organized and ready for this. I'll write up an in depth reflective post about graduating when I'm not so sleepy) :/

So in the mean time I'm watching internet videos and drawing. Here's an WIP of Alencia healing Theolyn on the stairs of a public square (I had the Spanish Steps of Rome in mind when I did this, but no idea why they are there. I wanted to try to draw stairs).

To be inked and colored soon.

Here's a video until then:

Final Countdown

My FINAL finals are drawing to a close. I'm nearly finished with my '3D Image and Movement' class. I just have to finish the packaging for my CD and then drop it off.
Then.
I'm.
DONE.

It still hasn't 100% kicked in yet.
But while that kicks in, enjoy some of the work I've been working on:

Here's some screen shots of my 3D Image and Movement animation. It's really simple but I worked really hard on the squid model, creating it, rigging and animating it (it's little fins on its head move) and figuring everything out. My teacher Matt Wallin was a huge help.

I'll post the actual animation once I get the blogger bugs figured out.

Here are some of my Projects in Illustration projects.

I'm still not 100% satisfied with this poster but it's a lot better than it originally was.

This one I was very proud of. There were some things compositionaly I could have done differently but it was my first time doing a completely watercolored illustration and I loved it. I'll be doing more watercolor illustrations in the future thanks to this piece.

This illustration was done to go with an article about women in comics as creators and as an audience. For this illustration I focused on women as an audience and how mainstream comic companies typically don't cater to them, and even treat them in a condescending manner. I think this issue has gotten better than it used to be but it could stand to be better. I still cant' walk into a comic store without seeing covers like the ones in the background here. All those covers are based on covers from Marvel and DC from the last few years (this decade).

Project number 4 was a group project. I had a really great time working with my group members and I got my best grade so far for this project. We had to turn in production work for a comic that we created together and we decided to go head and do two pages of finished comic.
The story is about two people with Synesthesia who become friends. The girl, Antoinette, has visual/auditory Synesthesia (like me) and Tyler has auditory/taste Synesthesia. The backgrounds were done by Tim Robinson (he also did a huge painting of the bar/club environment for this) and the character design and pencils for the pages were done by Aimee Hwang. I inked the pages on a separate page of Bristol board with a series 7 #2 brush. Which I am now going to marry. I am in series 7 heaven with this brush and will definately be using it more, and practicing more.

This post is getting pretty long so I'll post my finals work for figure painting and digital drawing later. I hope everyone at VCU is having a good end of the semester! After graduation (the 20th of May) I'll be working on moving out so I'll be busy for a while. I'll try to post some sketches here at my tumblr before then.

Until next time!
