Tumbln around

Hey Guys!

Just a heads up I decided to start a companion blog to here over at Tumblr. Thanks to my friends I'm using Tumblr a lot (e.i. wasting time on it looking at lovely things) so I decided to reach out and show some art over there too in an attempt to widen my audience. Now I'm certainly not abandoning this blog, no Sir, I'm just going to be posting things over there too.

If you're interested in following along the address is http://franrowanart.tumblr.com/
Let me know if you have a tumblr and I'll check it out too!

Also a reminder we're having our art show this Saturday at RealiTea (1531 West Main Street, Next to Main Art Supply) at 5-8pm. Come check it out and chat with the showing artists!

Now back to finals work for me!

Sketch Break

It is that time of year again. FINALS! BUT! It is finals, for the FINAL TIME! As such I am up to my neck in work so while I wait for ink to dry, I did these sketches. Then I slapped some color on one of them. Enjoy!

Sketch of Alencia and Theolyn. I think someone sneakily snatched Alencia's coin purse and now they are without any money. She's not taking it well. And Theolyn lost his shirt? But he gained a celtic raven torc. I love torcs.

My Ukulele playing bard girl. "Fear of the Dark" by Iron Maiden plays on my Pandora and I love singing along with it. For some reason I started imagining her walking alone through a dark forest singing this nervously to her self out loud (very loudly) to assure herself. Granted being so noisy in a dark forest is probably not a good idea :/ She still doesn't' have a name, and I haven't got her guardian's design down yet.

Enough playing around! (for now), back to finishing this comic page for class so I can show it off soon! I'll also be posting progress photos from my final painting I'm working on for figure painting class. It's a monster.

Here is one of the posters for the for show draw by Erin C.

Hearing Colors

Hey everyone!

In my illustration class I'm working on a collaborative project with some classmates. We're working on a comic about two people with Synesthesia and the friendship that developes from it. Synesthesia is a neurological condition where some of your senses will be crossed and interact with each other in ways that they normally would not.

For the sake of the class we're only doing priliminary work for it but I'm really enjoying it so far. It's really growing on me since I have synesthesia myself and its' allowing me to share my experiences with others. I've been wanting to do some paintings of what I 'see' when listening to music so this assignment allowed me to play with how we would show it in the comic. In our story there is a girl who can 'hear colors' like I can, and a guy who can 'taste words.' I did a few small paintings today of what I see with certain songs as preliminary work for figuring out how to show this in the comic.

This painting is what I see when listening to 'Derezzed' by Daft Punk from the new Tron OST. It was done in gouache and acrylics.

This song is 'Faraway' by Apocalyptica from their album 'Apocalyptica.' It was done in watercolor with a little bit of gouache and acrylic.

This painting is 'Battery' by Metallica and the San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra from Metalica's S&M album.

I'll be posting more work from this project as it progresses.

Animatical!

I finished my animatic for Digital Drawing class! :D

[Edit]- since the size of this is killing my blog, here is the link to view the animatic. Sorry, resizing it didn't work.

This features my character Alencia cautiously roaming through a dark tomb. She's carrying a skull under her arm that is a relic she's retrieving for a nearby monastery. Part of a story I'm working on that will one day be a comic.

Done in Photoshop CS2 and CS4 or 5 thanks to the computer lab.

Classwork Catchup

Hey guys!

Things are getting busy again but I've managed to gather up some photos from work done in my painting class. Click to see the images at full size. Enjoy!

Experimenting with conveying softness of flesh.

This was a from an in class exercise where for every brush stroke we put down we had to mix a new color. It was certainly interesting.

My first two day in class pose. Done on gessoed paper.

Part 1 of a two day pose. I have the painting drying in my dining room. I'll post the finished photo later.
