Scion sketch

Photobucket

I saw this cool photo on Corbis of a guy doing that to a subway pole so I drew Ramla suspending herself. You've got to have a lot of upper body strength for that.
Then I drew Ramla and Saturday on the subway. I imagined they were on their way to meet some other Scions for the first time. I thought it would be cool. But we haven't played yet so there is no real story yet :P

Back to homework now D:

Poictesme

So over the weekend I emailed my illustration submission to Poicetesme (VCU's liteary/art student anthology) and I got a reply from them today:

Thank you very much for your interest in Poictesme. These are good illustrations, though not what we typically publish. I can go ahead and forward them to our art director, though I would suggest that you take a look at some of our previous issues (which can be found at poictesme.vcustudentmedia.com ) to see the kind of work we have published in the past.

If you have any questions, please do not hestiate to ask.

I'm hoping the art director likes my (one) illustration that I submitted (known as "Monster Smash" on my Deviantart). I actually have seen the art they've published in the past and I think my illustration would be a nice addition to their collection. I've seen paintings, photographs, drawings, and I don't see why my illustration wouldn't be a nice addition to the mix. They also don't say what kind of art they would prefer you to submit on their website. If they don't want comics or anything that looks like something you haven't done in class then they should probably say so. It's just a tad misleading. However I'm still hopeful and keeping my fingers crossed that I can get in. Here's hoping! 8D

To do:
(non-school related)
-Relic contest pic (due 30th)
-Threadless contest entry due (Dec. 1st)
-finish Ankia bookmark
-color lolita prints
-prepare prints/envelopes to send out
-print christmas cards

(school related)

Practice Comic and some CWQ

Just posted up a two page comic I did for practice over at Deviantart.com

Layla Fight by ~Spork-Bunny on deviantART

I've also been working on some Clockwork Queen work today. I finally have a design for the scientist who gives Samantha her 'eye'. I'm very excited :D I wasn't going to to post the sketches but I will when I'm done. I love seeing other people's progress and production sketches so I might as well return the favor.

I'm also entering a poster contest over here. I hope I make the deadline. (Yay Nostalgia Critic!)

No classes means more work

So I emailed the people at Poictesme and they said they don't normally take comics at submissions but I could send them to the art director and see what he says (I don't really have anything to send, I just wanted to know so I could work under a deadline). But they also offered to see some of my other work so I might just do some pen/ink illustrations for now. Could be good practice plus I really want to publish something while I'm in school. I'm still kicking myself for missing my chance with Shoujo Phonebook.

Otherwise I've been sketching away in my new Moleskine sketchbook which I now love like a child. I've also been coming up with tidbits of story for a Spork Bunny mini comic. I'm still not 100% sure if I'll actually do it. I've also been planning out some promo/cover images for Clockwork Queen but really I think I should start doing some more sketches of the world and vehicles and things in it before I try to handle the pages again. I've also decided to use pigment liners for inking, I'm just not skilled enough with the crow quill yet to do the whole comic with it. I'll keep practicing though.

Clayton Chronicles is on hold, I haven't been working on it at all since coming to school. But it won't stay that way, we still plan on publishing that baby, even if it takes a while. After all, Lord of the Rings took Tolkien 14 years to write. I want everything to be perfect (or as near as possible) when we start publishing stuff. I'll probably have to realize I cant' do that but I'll wait till then!

Or Maybe Not is doing okay, I've done some work on it since coming to school but not lately (within the last two or three weeks).

All in all I'm feeling good and my weekend is pretty open. I have some figure drawing homework but I can do that in a day. I also have to study for a math test for tomorrow but that's really it. Meaning more time for drawing! I'll be sure to get off my lazy butt and do more drawing (and maybe finish coloring those bookmarks!).

Have a great weekend everyone! I'm off the gym!

Ultra Artsy TO DO LIST OF DOOM!

Sorry, no arts today, but I must write this up for my own good! 8D
SRS THINGS TO DO WHILE IN SCHOOL TO HELP ME AS AN ARTIST

-Get published in Poictesme: VCU's Literary Journal:This is an anthology that the school puts out. I recently picked up a copy myself and it seems to mainly focus on literary work with some art in it. What better to do than submit a comic or two :D Art and Literature FTW! It says up to 5 pieces, I'll see if I can do a five page self contained comic. It's no Shoujo Phonebook club/anthology but it'll do.
http://www.poictesme.vcustudentmedia.com/

-Join SOCA and go on the New York Trip: I'm glad for the chance to do figure drawing with a bunch of my peers and have no teachers present. I can also use it for my figure drawing "10 sketches per class" assignments. Boy do I love those assignments -_- I'm also hoping to go on the New York trip in spring. I'd love to go to the galleries and emerge myself in art and all its glory! Super inspiration times too. Plus I've always wanted to go to New York.
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2857073300

-Make some nice business cards: This is slightly overdue but I finally found a printable template for business cards that I can use on Photo Shop (and not MS Word) so I should make some. Because I r srs artist.

-Professional Website?: I'm still not very familiar with dream weaver and I haven't had time to really study it. I might just keep Deviantart and my art blog for now, but I'll defiantly do one in the future.

FOR THE WINTER/SUMMER BREAKS?
Or when I have time...

-Get an AA table at a con: This will most likely have to wait till the summer and hopefully by then I will have a job to. If I have a job I can pay to get prints and merchandise made (not to mention actual comics printed) and pay to get the table and ticket for said con; then I can sell stuff and hopefully make monies. THAT IS THE PLAN.
Possible merch:
-comic books
-prints/mini posters
-bookmarks
-buttons
-stickers
-maybe postcards and keychains

-Look into making website
-WORK ON COMIC PAGES!!!!!! Gotta have comics to make a comic book :P or three...
-Keep up a good sequential/illustration portfolio to bring to cons.
-Keep drawing everyday.
-------------------------------------------

I think this is a good start. I need to make some more in depth goals with deadlines, especially for completing the comics and which con I want to/can go to, and making things to sell (when I should finish the pictures, what to make, how much it costs to get made, etc).

New arts!

Despite having homework (which I have been doing) I've managed to get some personal art done :D This includes two sketches colored on photoshop and an Or Maybe Not comic page, but I'll be saving that one for the first issue. I don't want all of them being show before the book gets done. Which is really hard because I want to show them all ;_;
moving on.

Photobucket
Here is a promotional image for our geek comedy comic, "Or Maybe Not". Click on it to download from deviantart!
I spent pretty much all night on this but I'm really pleased with it. It was based on a poster I saw for KERA magazine (with some changes on my part).

Photobucket
Here is a 'wedding photo' of one of my steampunk characters from a story I'm doing with my good friend Ian (he's also writing and editing OMN with us). Unfortunately for her, her wedding is not a happy one :/
The more I look at her dress the more I want it.

That's it for now, I might take photos of some homework assignments I've done lately tho they aren't terribly interesting. I did do a good pencil drawing of a skeleton torso. Skeletons are fun. Unless you're in my figure drawing class x_x
More updates later!

Flyer Art

Today I drew, inked, and colored a picture for my cousin. It's for a flyer for a club event he's doing.

It's inspired by the comic Sky Doll and Daft Punk. I think it turned out pretty well.

Bookmark #5- Patrick

I just finished coloring book mark #5 of Patrick.

Photobucket

Next up is the star of Clayton Chronicles, Clayton himself :P Then it will be Rose the barmaid and Ankia in Egyptian wear.

Also: My Bristol Board just arrived! :D I can start the comic pages after/during the bookmarks! *o*

Clockwork Queen Sticker Design

Here is the sticker design I finished yesterday:

Photobucket

I'd like to put a URL underneath the title but I'm not sure if it should be my DA address or this blog. I'll decide later.

Still no sign of my bristol board. I think I have to wait 10 days so tomorrow will be a week. Not really worth complaining tho, it gives me time to work on this stuff :D

More to come!

A DA facelift, bookmarks and stickers

I decided to make a new ID for my Deviantart page today:

Photobucket

Or see it here with commentary! The colors remind me of Magnito now that's done but that's not a bad thing.

I've got batch 3 of the Clayton Chronicles bookmarks drawn and inked. This is the next four in the series. I think that will be all for now, I don't want to make too many for now. Next I'll be doing about 4 or so Clockwork Queen bookmarks and a sticker. The sticker will be a chibi version of Sarah Winters (as a robot) with a little gear for a halo then it will say "Clockwork Queen" underneath it. I have it drawn and inked already, I just need to scan and color it and put the title underneath it. I'm really excited. I plan on making the stickers through Paper Forest eventually.

Well I better head off now, I can hear a storm coming outside : / I hate summer storms but we do need the rain...

CC: Book Marks batch 2

I am on fire with these book marks! :D

Today I colored the Ashley and Legarna bookmarks that I posted the line art of in my DA gallery a few weeks ago. I used the same coloring techniques as the last pair of bookmarks and I really like how they came out :)

Photobucket

Again the bookmarks printed out on cardstock came out lighter than they look on the computer but I still like them. These ones came out a little thinner and slightly taller since the file I was working with was bigger.

Photobucket

I've got some designs for book marks of some of the male characters next.
Stay tuned!

Clayton Chronicles: Revving up

Today I colored a pair of bookmarks I had drawn of Misaki, the snow leopard swords-woman, and Vespa the sorceress via PhotoShop.

I was really proud when I drew these and seeing them colored now is really exciting to me. I never really had a coloring style for the computer so I was really happy with the results of today's 'experiment' in computer coloring. I used to rely on the dodge and burn tool too much for making something seem three dimensional so this flat method of coloring is a huge improvement.

Photobucket

Here is a screen cap of how the colors look on the computer.
When I printed them they came out lighter, but still nice.

Photobucket

And here is a montage of Clayton Stuff that has been going down lately.

Photobucket

After my new bristol board arrives, more work will be done on the pages for Clayton Chronicles. 8D Hopefully some more work on Clockwork Queen too. Fingers crossed with school coming up.

Hero Time

I've been doing some more comic work lately and I decided to take some time to talk about the people who inspire me as an artist, and who I greatly admire.

Amy Reeder Hadley (Tentopet)
http://www.tentopet.com/

I first saw Amy, or 'Tentopet' over at the Manga Academy website back when I was a fledgling comic book artist in early high school. I had thought her work was pretty awesome but my admiration for her really grew when right before I started college. I picked up a copy of "Fools Gold", her OEL Manga. (OEL means Original English Language, a term used for western artists who do manga). I really admired her style as it was a mix of realism with a playful twist. She put a lot of detail into her work and made things like freckles and sewing machines seem interesting. Right now she has just finished work on Madame Xanadu issue #1 with Vertigo. I was a bit skeptical about her switch from Tokyopop to Vertigo but I think she has certainly grown as a artist. The detail and hard work she puts into her comics makes me proud of her, and I aspire to be at her level one day. Even with all this work to do she still has time to give back to the art community by doing YouTube video tutorials. I personally find these very informative and inspiring. Her website also has earlier tutorials that are equally useful.

Marty Le Grow
http://sadwonderland.deviantart.com/

I first read about the work of Marty in an issue of Anime Insider in 8th or 9th grade. I remember sitting in the waterford crystal shop where my mom worked one afternoon and seeing this tiny article about a book called Bizengahst. The article described this girl who pitched an idea so awesome that Tokyopop scooped her up for a big book deal. I was in awe as she was living my (then) dream. I found her Deviantart page and followed her work on the book. I bought the first volume as soon as it came out and I loved it. It greatly appealed to my then heavily gothic sensibilities and I found the story fascinating. (The series is now on book five, coming out on the 15th of July.)
Marty was everything I wanted to be. She went to and graduated from the school of my dreams (Savannah College of Art and Design), did comics for a living with a hugely popular company, she wore and made elaborate costumes and got to go to conventions to show them and her work off. I still greatly admire her to this day, and I'm very excited to see how Bizenghast will end and what series she will do next. Her snaky humor also never fails to amuse :)

Bettina M. Kurkoski
http://www.dreamworldstudio.net/main_v7.html

The first thing that attracted me to the work of Bettina was her amazing coloring skills. She uses copic markers, which happen to be a personal favorite tool of mine. At Nekocon 2006 I had the opertunity to meet her. We talked about markers (as she had just bought a ton of ink refils) and she cheered when she found out I used them and prefered traditional media. She even looked over my portfolio and gave me tips when she didn't have to. I'll never forget how nice and friendly she was. She even gave me a hug X3
Here I am (in the black lolita dress, lol) standing next to her. She was there promoting her manga "My Cat Loki"
Photobucket

As fun as this post has been, it's getting really long now ^^; I'll do another Heros post in the future, it was fun sharing my heros and why I admire them so much.
I hope you all find some inspiration from these fantastic female artists!

Stay Steamy!

Work and Loot

I have been working on homework since noon today (it's about 8pm now) and I am tuckered out to say the least.
First is my loot from Artist Alley today:

Photobucket
My copy of the new Shoujo Phonebook Anthology and a Rosen Maiden keychain.

Photobucket
Here is the Toph print I got from Zimmay

I also spent about 4 hours working on my tight roughs for my Drawing for Sequential project. It's meant to be the Washington Arch in Manhattan. The teacher gave me a photo of it but I had to draw it in a different view. I only looked up other photos for details of the statues and the top of the arch (because the photo was so fuzzy). I really like how it turned out and I'm so happy that it's done for now.
Photobucket

More work on Clockwork Queen tomorrow. Also gotta figure out what to write for my Survey of Sequential Thesis.
*faints*

Production Sketches

A teaser photo of the first batch of character sketches for CWQ have just been posted on DA, I will scan them individually later (after working on Drawing for Sequential homework).

I also went to Shoujo Phonebook club's Artist Alley today. Lilly had her table set up and I bought a print from . I also picked up a copy of SPB's anthology and got Lilly to sign her comic in it. I'll post a photo of my loot later. Gotta get to work on Drawing homework, then back to work on CWQ sub packet.

Stay Steamy!

It begins....

Today I have begun writing a rough draft of the first script for Clockwork Queen. It wont' be a full script yet as I don't have time to do that right now (before school ends) so I'll just get as much of it done as I can. I also have to make sure to have the first five pages of it done perfectly so I can finish the first five comic pages for my submissions packets. I think to save time I will do it on my smaller Maxon paper and print it on printer paper for the packets. I do love using that paper...

progress01

Here is a WIP shot of the CWQ gang getting a mission brief from Samantha. I plan on using this as part of my submissions packet. I have some mistakes in it to correct however, before I ink it.
So the work is happening! I'll keep updating till the submissions packets are done.
Excitement!

Artist Alley is also this week. I'll be giving a friend of mine a visit as she is selling bookmarks there. Hopefully I can score some cool comics while I'm there :D I love seeing what my fellow students are up to comic-wise.

I'll keep you updated! Until then,
Stay Steamy!

PROGRESS, IT DOES HAPPEN!

Big news for Clockwork Queen!

For my final project for Comic Book Scripting class, we have to prepare a submissions packet to send out to a publisher (or two). I've decided to send out Clockwork Queen and see how she does. This means... PROGRESS IS HAPPENING! I've already started some production art, and writing for it. Let's hope I can get it all done by the 26th of May ;D I'm so excited!

I'll be sure to keep you updated here.

Stay Steamy!

Comic update

Gosh CWQ is so neglected ;_;

School has been really busy (as usual) but it's paying off because I made the Dean's list for the Winter 08 quarter! :D And I'm hoping to do it again this quarter so I've been very busy with work for classes and putting together a portfolio for editor's day next month; which includes a little practice doodle that turned into a comic page for Clockwork Queen as seen . Sorry for the watermarking but I recently felt it necessary to do so.
Samantha is giving Millie 'The Talk' about Men, while Mick is doing the same for Cole. I plan to finish this out in a few pages following the same two sided, top/bottom format as this page is.

I'm currently working on a one page illustration of the crew looking over some maps on the kitchen table of the Amelia (the airship of Mick and Samantha). I would take a photo but my camera batteries have died and I cant' find the thingy to recharge them :< But I'll post it on DA and link it here when its' done.

Clockwork Queen trudges onward!
Have a good week, and STAY STEAMY!

Madonna and Child Painting- WIP

Hello all!
This update is about a painting that I had in my head and have finally started today. It is the robot of Sara Winters, and a robot baby, posing like the many "Madonna and Child" paintings (I've seen so many in my Survey of Western Art II class that they stuck in my head). This will accompany my Clockwork Queen comic, maybe as back cover. One day.

Photobucket

I haven't gotten to do a lot of work on the comic itself so it's nice to be able to work on this. School has been taking over my weekends. But I did get some new comic book paper (manga paper actually) but I really like working with it so I'm hoping to at least get some layout pages done. It's smaller than the usual 11x17 inches, this stuff is A4 sized. I prefer working on a smaller scale. So hopefully I'll have some pages done by the end of the quarter, but I'm not totally counting on it. Unfortunately school comes first then fun art. I'm trying to get all A's this quarter, and the next (I managed to snag all sequential classes! so happy!) so I can get into the honors program at VCU when I transfer next fall. Ugghh *dies*

A picture update

A new Clockwork Queen sketch!

Photobucket
I thought it would be funny to show Mick trying to show Samantha his affections for her. His face looks really sincere, and she looks more angry than she really is. This idea popped into my head when I saw sketch #5 of Brichan's character meme: http://bri-chan.deviantart.com/art/character-meme-reginald-74849226 Check out her DA site while you're there, she does the cutest Alice in Wonderland fan art XD

School has been really busy but I'm trying to squeeze in more work on the comic whenever I can. I love drawing and writing it so I'm not quitting. I'm also cooking up plans for a Samantha cosplay for when I take the mini comics to cons. I can't wait. :D I'll post links for costuming ideas too when I find some.

Stay steamy!

Age of Progress

So today in my spare time I started the first page for the first chapter of Clockwork Queen. It's a few scenes that happen before the mini comic began so I'm not restarting, but I might redo some of the mini comic pages. Especially after my life drawing class. Some of the characters just looked way too flat to me, so with improvements in skill come improvements in work. I'll try to at least post some WIP photos of pages, and a watercolor picture of Millie. I'm also working on watercolor portraits of each of the characters for CWQ. I love my cheap $2 Crayola watercolors <3

More to come soon!
