Fools Never Die

Hey guys, here is that post I promised you! Here's what we've got:

+Gifts
My fiance and our best friend Ian's birthdays land on the same day so I was set to prepare a pair of gifts for them. They are both writers so I thought I'd customize a journal for each of them.

Here's Ryan's:

It features his 'Or Maybe Not' persona, writing more scrips for the comic. Which I will work on... I swear!

And Ian's journal:

It's a metaphorical portrait of a character of his from a story we are working on. I used colored pencil, ink and white gel pen for both journals.

While working on both journals I sketched out thumbnails trying to figure out what I wanted to draw on them and how. I ended up with a few sketches as a result of this that I ended up liking on their own.





+Pen Tests

During my weekly movie night with my friends I also did some inking pen tests.

This one is of Theolyn from my Alencia stories. I used a new ballpoint pen I picked up earlier this week. It's nice to work with but it does not take to pencil very well. This will probably stay a sketching pen.

I also did some brush pen tests to show myself that if I did Alencia's stories inked with a brush pen how it would look. Here's what I came up with.


Next I will do some actual comic pages inked with brush pen for a final test. I am pleased with the look so far. I can get lots of detail, line weight variation and contrast. (And that little rabbit at the bottom is Reach's rabbit Clover.)

I didn't want to stretch this page too long so I'll be posting the best of my latest Dr. Sketchy's sketches later. Also, if I can't think of blog titles I may just stick to metal song titles from my Pandora station.

Internet Spring Cleaning

Hello everyone!

A quick update: I'm currently in the process of spring cleaning. I've deleted my VCU blog, the companion blog to this one. I don't really have a use for it. It was primarily to keep friends in the loop about my VCU misadventures but now facebook does that pretty well. And getting rid of it allows me to focus on this blog, the important one, by bringing you updates! :D I'm also in the process of deleting my myspace, which I haven't used in at least a year. It's just taking up space. So don't panic if certain links don't work or you see those pages missing.

Updates will be coming up later today. I have some birthday gifts, class work and sketches to share!

Story Boards

Hey guys!
I'm working on a project for Digital Drawing where we have to show 'time and movement' and one of the ways we can do this is with story boards. I decided this is relevant to my interests so I sketched up some thumbnails of my character Alencia walking through a dark hallway in an underground tomb. I'm going to play with lighting and showing mood. You can't see it in the roughs but she is carrying a skull under her arm. It's part of a story I'm writing for her, I may have mentioned it here earlier.
I put the sketches together into a gif to show how I'm going to put the finished, refined, storyboards together. Apparently Disney does this when they get their story boards together how they want it so it creates a mini animation.


These are just roughs but they will line up better for the finished product :P I'll be sure to post this when it's done! Now its' off to bed for me, Friday means early class. Goodnight folks!

Robots and Drumsticks

Hello everyone! Sorry for the lack of activity over here, graduation is gearing up and the rest of my midterms are now in full swing. I'm up to my eyeballs in work but am working through it!

Here is some of my work from my digital drawing class. I've been having some trouble with my flash drive and files becoming corrupted so here is what I could salvage from my robot project. My robot is a victorian butler-bot, created by an eccentric professor of high esteem.

Recently I went to see Apocalyptica with some friends. It was wonderful and a great way to end spring break (even if the audience left more to be desired). I doodled up a little comic about it:

Kamikaze Girls Book Cover

For my Projects and Illustration class I've been working on a book cover illustration for Novala Takemato's 'Kamikaze Girls', also known as 'Shimotsuma Monogatari' (Shimotsuma Story). I really enjoyed the book, loved the movie (meh on the manga) so I decided to redesign the cover for this project. Old designs: Hardcover Paperback

My design:

For those not familiar with the story it is about a selfish Lolita named Momoko (lolita as in the japanese street fashion) and a biker Yanki chick named Ichiko who become unlikely friends while searching for a legendary embroiderer, Emma.
I used watercolors, ink, acrylic paint, and colored pencil on smooth Arches watercolor paper. I really enjoyed using the paper and watercolors and I will definitely be using them in the future. It was also my first time stretching watercolor paper for use and it worked well. It all went smoothly thanks to advice from my good friend Erin. She's doing a really cool series of illustrations; she's making up a monster for different periods in art history using different media. Check it out at her blog!

I'm not dead... I'm doing better!

Wow, we're at 200 posts now! :D

I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm not dead. I've got some exciting things cooking, I've just got a rush of projects due before spring break so I've been working on those.
